When mentioning our upcoming trip to Honduras, we invariably receive a few unsolicited remarks from strangers, "But aren't there a lot of diseases there?" or "Isn't it terribly dangerous in Honduras?"
They either don't know or have forgotten that they are talking to a soon-to-be pediatric infectious disease fellow. I like to spend my free time surfing the CDC website and collecting giant stuffed microbes. I love to learn about diseases with names like Chagas and Kalazar... and I prefer to keep my son away from said diseases. I have taken very seriously our decision to travel to Honduras with Noah.
So why do we do it? Jeff and I have always loved to serve internationally, and now is no exception. However, I am struck with a much more powerful draw to international missions after the birth of our son. Surrounded by Boppies, Wubbanubs, Bumbos, and binkies, it is easy to forget that the world does not revolve around Noah. Life is not about baby schedules, grocery runs, bottle choices, and baby food preparation. Even at work, it is easy to forget that I am caring for patients when I am overwhelmed by evaluation forms, paper work, and staff meetings.
So we go to Honduras to remind us that parenthood is full of surprises, especially when you get to experience a new culture together. Doctoring is a privilege, even if it means staying up all night and feeling frightened sometimes. Life itself is a gift, even with scabies.

What a fantastic perspective, Liz. It was so awesome getting to talk about this and pray with you guys on Wednesday. We're so pumped. That photo of Noah made Paul and I laugh hard. What's to worry about in Honduras when Jeff is pulling stunts like that in the states!? You're right, life is a gift, and even with scabies. Or giardia.
Seriously, how is that baby being held up there? Not from that olive oyl limb
We will love to keep up to date on Noah. Sean loves to see his buddy and commented, "He is big now!". Safe travels and God Bless.
This is a very refreshing perspective on parenthood....very refreshing (it's me, Sally). The blog looks great!
Great perspective. Great reminder. You guys are already fantastic parents, and the trip is going to be great for all of you. I mean, why NOT travel with little kids? They're just so portable at this age.
Absolutely love it -- take that kid to Honduras and let him eat dirt, he'll be just fine and everyone will have an adventure!!!
I'm not sure if that picture QUALIFIES or DISQUALIFIES Jeff from serving in Kids Club
