Each child is registered, weighed, and measured. Based on this data, we use a laptop computer to calculate for malnutrition. We then screen each child's vision and test for anemia with a finger stick. At the next station, children learn about dental care and are treated with dental varnish to prevent cavities. The children then undergo a brief physical exam and peak flows for asthma screening.
Before departure, all children receive vitamins, parasite treatment, and a toothbrush. Malnourished children are connected to a feeding program, and other issues are dealt with accordingly. However, the truly awe-inspiring aspect of this field clinic embodies the philosophy of Shoulder to Shoulder: we aspire to prevent problems, not just treat them. I am privileged to be part of such a mission.

yuummmmmm ... dental varnish. My favorite part of going to other countries is that kids all respond to love with joy. I'm so glad that Noah is seeing that (even if he doesn't understand it all the way yet). Hug some kids for me!!!
