Crying it out for Honduras (and Jane Austen)

Eight months ago, when Noah Schlaudecker was born, we (his parents) decided that we would take him with us on a medical trip to Honduras in April 2008. And we thought he would surely be sleeping through the night by then. Who wants to go on a medical brigade with a screeching infant?

We should have known better. We tried to let him cry it out around 4 or 5 months of age; he screamed for 90 minutes, puked all over the crib, and made such a pile of sweat that we thought he was dying of tuberculosis.

Last night, he followed his usual routine of falling asleep while nursing. This is typically followed by a screaming fit 45 minutes later, and more nursing at midnight, 3 AM, and 6 AM. However, he refused to go in the crib at all last night; he wanted to stay nursing in my lap. Unfortunately for Noah, the PBS Jane Austen series, Sense and Sensibility, was about to start. So I left him in his crib and commenced the Ferberization of Noah Schlaudecker.

Eighty minutes later, the movie was about to end, and Noah finally fell asleep. He continued to sob in his sleep for about two hours. I did not feel victorious; I felt like the worst mother (and pediatrician) in the world. But it might just have worked.

On a brighter note, Noah learned how to use a spoon yesterday as well. Very big day in the life of such a little guy!

You are DEFINITELY not the worst mother -- in fact, you are wonderful. I hope Noah is getting all geared up for his first (of MANY) mission trip.
